Achilles Surgery

Problems with the Achilles tendon can be quite painful and limit a sufferer's mobility. While more conservative treatment options are available, in some cases, the physicians at Perimeter Orthopaedics may determine that surgery is necessary to repair the torn Achilles tendon.

When a doctor performs surgery on a torn Achilles tendon, the goal is to repair the tendon. Because of swelling and inflammation, it may be necessary to delay surgery for about a week after the tear initially occurs.

Ankle Fusion

Ankle fusion surgery is a procedure that is sometimes referred to as ankle arthrodesis, and is sometimes recommended for patients who suffer from degenerative arthritis of the ankle.

Birth defects that result in deformities

Bunion Surgery

Bunions are very common foot deformities that develop at the base of the big toe. The joint enlarges and protrudes, sometimes appearing red, tender and inflamed. Bunions can make wearing shoes and even walking quite painful. They often develop from wearing shoes that are too tight or too narrow, and in some cases can be corrected without bunion surgery.

In some cases, however, bunion surgery is necessary. Bunion surgery, sometimes called a bunionectomy, aims to restore the proper alignment of the big toe joint. A surgeon may remove some of the soft tissue or bone in the foot to allow for proper alignment. In some cases, internal devices may be necessary to stabilize the foot.

The goal of bunion surgery is to relieve pain and correct the deformity, thus returning full mobility to the patient.

Custom Orthotics

Abnormal walking patterns or gaits can lead to pain and further complications. Wearing custom orthotic shoe inserts can oftentimes help, correcting the irregularities in walking patterns and relieving pain.

Orthotic devices are designed to control the function of the foot. They work to improve strains and aches in the legs, thighs and back. They can also absorb shock, relieve pressure from uncomfortable areas and improve balance. Orthotics can be especially useful for those who suffer from diabetes, arthritis and deformities.

An orthopaedist can recommend the type of orthotic that's right for you, and if necessary, specializes a custom orthotic that will fit your feet.

Diabetic Wound Treatment

People who suffer from diabetes are at risk for serious complications, particularly foot problems. Minor wounds on the feet, like sores and ulcers, can worsen, leading in many cases to amputation. The rate of amputation among diabetics is 10 times higher than the rate among those who do not have diabetes, so it's important that those with diabetes seek treatment for even small wounds.

A physician can perform a thorough evaluation of a foot wound or sore, checking the blood circulation to the area, cleaning the sore and recommending treatment. Early intervention is key, because wounds and sores in diabetic patients can worsen rapidly.

Dr. Spiegl has been treating diabetic foot wounds for more than 30 years and our entire staff understands the critical necessity of getting advance wound care quickly. Unlike a typical wound care center with dressing changes, we use advanced modalities including dermal skin substitutes to heal an ulcer quickly and eliminate amputations. We act aggressively and work in conjunction with a network of local providers such as endocrinology, neurology, infectious disease, etc. Each patient is important to us and we take pride in getting the best results for our patients. Our facilities include a convenient on-site surgical center for procedures should that be necessary.

Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is a modern treatment option used to relieve the pain and symptoms of a number of different common conditions and disorders. These include:

The therapy is a non-invasive procedure that directs low energy shock waves at an area that is exhibiting pain. The procedure is safe and effective, as well as quick—an extracorporeal shock wave therapy session lasts about 15 minutes, and a course of treatment is typically three appointments. Because the procedure is non-invasive, patients can experience pain and symptom relief without the risk of true surgery.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is ideal for many shoulder patients, and can often result in a complete and comprehensive recovery from pain and other symptoms.

Flatfoot Correction

Flatfoot is a condition that involves the loss of the arch of the foot. In some cases, patients are born with flatfoot. In other cases, as with adult acquired flatfoot or posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, the condition develops gradually.

In many cases, flatfoot can be corrected with medication, physical therapy and supportive bracing. In some cases, however, surgery is necessary to correct the deformity.

Flatfoot correction surgery can involve a number of different types of procedures. In some patients, a surgeon will remove the inflamed tissue and repair the damaged tendon, stabilizing the arch. In other cases, bone fusion may be necessary. The goal of flatfoot correction surgery is to stabilize the arch, relieve pain and restore mobility.

Fungal Nail Specialists

Toenail fungus is a common condition in which fungal organisms that thrive in moist, dark environments infect the skin around the toenails. Symptoms of fungal toenail infections include thickened, brittle toenails, discoloration of the nail or distortion in the shape of the nail. Left untreated, infection can spread to the surrounding skin.

A number of different treatment options are available to combat fungal toenail infection. These include:

Many patients will respond to anti-fungal medications alone, although in some, more severe cases, fungal toenail surgery may be necessary to remove the infected nail. Treating a fungal toenail infection early can help prevent the infection from spreading, causing further, more serious complications.

Orthopedic Heel Specialists

Pain in the heels of the foot can make even walking difficult. Unfortunately, orthopedic heel pain is relatively common.

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of orthopedic heel pain. In this condition, the plantar fascia, or connective tissue on the bottom of the foot, becomes inflamed and irritated, resulting in pain in the heel that limits mobility. Orthopedic Heel spur are also a common cause of orthopedic heel pain, developing as a result of stress on the muscles of the foot.  Patients who suffer from one or both of these conditions can often benefit from orthopedic heel bunion surgery.

Orthopedic Heel surgery is an effective means of treating pain caused by orthopedic heel spurs, plantar fasciitis or any other condition. It is oftentimes the only means of correcting chronic orthopedic heel bunion pain.
